Yolanda Fernández Soltero, ND
Meet the Doctor
Yolanda is the daughter of two physician parents, who exposed her to the fields of health and healing from an early age. From a young age, she always loved serving and healing others, but she never found her place in the field of traditional allopathic medicine. When she became pregnant with her first child, Federico, she wanted to look beyond the five-minute visit and the lack of education found in traditional healthcare, so she began working with a midwife and reading (a lot!). From there, her passion for breastfeeding, humanized childbirth, natural health and fertility, and certain alternative therapies was born. In this quest for knowledge, she discovered the field of naturopathic medicine. A field that, in the Western states of the US, as in other countries, is intertwined with the traditional healthcare system. Sadly, that's not the story for Puerto Rico, nor for most of the US, where prevention is lacking and patient education worse.
To add to her motivation, she had a complicated second pregnancy, resulting in a 30-week premature baby. During this challenge, she saw how prevention and natural therapies weren't even mentioned for her daughter's delicate health. With her own research challenge, she began giving her supplements and homeopathic remedies, in addition to maintaining exclusive breastfeeding (an extremely difficult task). She saw firsthand how her daughter thrived significantly faster than other babies in a similar environment.
Therefore, she took the adventure of studying for her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, to educate herself in a system that integrates prevention as a routine. She took her husband, Javier, and two children—Federico and Dalia—on this five-year adventure, during which they all learned, experienced, and overcame the challenges of a doctorate, a pandemic, and living far from family. Now she returns to her homeland, eager to share everything she has learned and create space for innovation and a different environment of health and healing.
